Before you sign anything, wait on these.

A few small steps now help keep the house and the estate safe until someone is in charge.

  • Papers about the houseHold off on signing anything about the house. The person the court puts in charge can act for the estate once they have letters from the court.
  • Their bank accountLeave it as it is for now. A joint account, or one with a named payee, goes to that person. An account in their name alone is part of the estate. Ask the bank what it needs before anyone takes money out.
  • The home insuranceKeep paying it. Call the insurer and tell them no one lives there now. Ask for their answer in writing.
  • The keysFind out who has a key. If no one lives there and you aren't sure, change the locks.

While you wait on the court, we can keep an eye on the house for you.

While you settle the estate

  • Keep it safeHouse checks, new locks, the lawn and pests. We go by and send you photos.
  • Clear it outSort, save, give away and haul off. Keepsakes set aside for the family. Photos before and after.
  • Plan what comes nextA value for the house and each choice laid out: keep it, rent it, list it or sell it.
  • A price and your OK in writing before any work starts
  • We work with the person the court put in charge
